Catalina Island: Dolphins, Aerial Footage, and Feeding Frenzies!!! 1 Minute Adventure #4
After a long pilot season which consisted of not 1 but 5 90+ work weeks back to back, it was time for some R&R. Not just any R&R… I needed a vacation.
So join us weekend on a weekend getaway to Catalina Island! Where I finally got some time to put into the Sony HDR AS100 along with the Live-View Remote (RM-LVR1). I also have it mounted in the new Underwater Housing (MPKAS3). However it’s just the original (SPKAS1) from the AS15 with the (AKAHD1A) lens from the AS30. Which means 0 access to the buttons inside the case. Which sucks because there is no way to turn off the camera from Live View Remote. I have some other issues but nothing really destroying my recommendation of the AS100V.
We also took 2012’s Hero3 Black with us strapped to the under belly of the DJI Phantom 2 running 1.08 firmware on the H3-2D gimbal. There is a newer version of the firmware for the Phantom but I didn’t want to update it till after the trip. Just in case I ran into any issues it would be in a controlled space later on. However that didn’t really save me from clipping a tree trying dodge a spooked bird and crash my drone. The DJI continues to be one of my favorite investments and also the hardest to use as more people either flock to talk to while flying or ask me to stop flying it. I try and stay out of the way but hopefully some of the newer updates to drone safety over the next few years will make public opinion change.
Special Thanks to Catalina Island Dolphin Quest. We were pretty lucky to come across a pod 60+ Dolphin and 25+ seals that afternoon. It was a friggin blast. Way better then I’d have imagined. Highly recommend but also keep in mind you don’t always get lucky like we did.
For those interested in the music I fell in love with this track on the ride home. 😀

Nothing was provided for this trip that wasn’t paid for by me. All gear, expenses, and bad choices were on me. If you’d like to sponsor a getaway for myself, my mom, or friends you can do so by reaching out to me at [email protected]
